Washington, D.C. Electricity Rates & Supply Options

You live next door to the largest data center cluster on the planet.

D.C. sits inside PJM, the grid that runs from the Midwest to the Atlantic, where the price of keeping power on standby went from $28.92 to $325 per megawatt-day in four years. You can't move the data centers. You can fix your own rate for twelve months before Pepco's resets on December 1.

Why fixed

Your default rate has a behavior problem.

01

It doesn't stand still.

Pepco's Standard Offer Service resets twice a year in the District — June 1 and December 1. The next one is December 1, 2026. Pepco doesn't profit on supply; it passes the cost through, which is exactly why the number moves.

02

Uncertainty is what you're buying now.

Unless you lock a rate, your supply price is set by a process you're not part of — and you find out what it did when the bill arrives. Over twelve months that can mean resets you never saw coming, each one priced before you could react.

03

One fixed number, twelve months.

One fixed supply rate. 12 months. Set on a two-minute call. The rate and the term are read to you out loud on a recorded verification before anything is authorized.

How it works, in three lines

  1. 1. Your bill has two halves.
  2. 2. Supply is the shoppable half.
  3. 3. That's the half a fixed rate applies to.

What it's worth

About two months of your electric bill. Every year.

Supply is roughly 55% of your bill and we model a 30% improvement on that half — about 1.98 months of the modelled bill per year. For the average Washington, D.C. household that's roughly $416 a year. It's a model, not a promise — what you're buying is the rate and the term.

Utilities in Washington, D.C.

Who delivers your power — and where to check officially

Supply choice in Washington, D.C. applies whichever utility serves your address (currently: Pepco). Your utility still owns the poles, wires and meter, still restores your power after an outage, and still sends your bill. What you can shop is the supply rate itself — pepco's standard offer service resets december 1, on a schedule your utility follows.

Three questions

See what a fixed rate looks like in Washington, D.C..

Are you the person named on the electric bill?

Only the account holder can authorize a change — that's a state rule, not ours.

How we operate

Six checks between you and a bad deal.

This industry has a reputation, and it earned it. Here's exactly what happens before we hand you to anyone.

Your state actually has choice.

If it doesn't, we tell you and stop. We don't route calls we can't serve.

You're the account holder.

Switching an account you don't hold is illegal. We check before we connect you.

Every enrollment is voice-verified.

A recorded third-party verification confirms your identity, the rate, the term and the terms — in your own words.

Rate and term are read to you.

Out loud, on the recording, before anything is authorized. No fine print doing the talking.

You get a cancellation window.

Every choice market provides one after enrollment begins. We'll explain yours on the call.

Your utility is untouched.

Same delivery, same outage response, same bill. We say it because it's the question everyone asks.

Questions

The things you're actually wondering.

Is this even a thing in D.C.?

Yes — the District has had residential supply choice for years and the PSC runs a comparison site. It's just quiet, because your bill never told you. Pepco delivers your power either way, and keeps restoring it after an outage. The only thing that changes is which rate prices the supply half.

Does my power go out during the switch?

No. Nothing is disconnected and nothing is installed. Your utility keeps delivering the electricity over the same wires it always has. The switch happens on paper between your utility and the supplier, and it takes effect on your next meter read.

What happens when the twelve months are up?

The contract states what the rate rolls into when the term ends, and the agent states it on the call before you agree. At the end of the term you are free to shop again, sign another fixed term, or return to your utility's default rate.

Is there a fee to switch?

Your utility does not charge you to change suppliers. Fixed-rate contracts can carry an early cancellation fee if you leave before the term ends. The agent states that fee on the call before you agree, and it appears in the contract you receive.
